Starting from April 2015 it is possible to apply for the Estonian e-Residency in Estonian embassies and consulates general all over the world.
What will change?
Previously an applicant had to make two visits to the Estonia Police and Border Guard office to apply for e-Residency. First, to apply for the e-Residency and the second time to collect the smart card.
From the 1st of April you can apply for e-Residency in Estonian embassies and consulates general without travelling to Estonia.
Can I apply for e-Residency online?
In April 2015 it is necessary to visit an Estonian foreign representation twice. First, to apply for e-Residency and the second time to collect the smart card. Starting from May 2015 it is possible to apply for e-Residency online and you have to visit the Estonian foreign representation only once to pick up the smart card.
How much does it cost to apply for e-Residency abroad?
If you wish to apply for e-Residency in an Estonian foreign representation the state fee will be 80 euros instead of 50 euros payable when applying in the Estonia Police and Border Guard service points.
What documents do I need to submit when applying abroad?
In order to apply for e-Residency abroad you need to submit the following documents:
An application form, which can be filled in for printing on a computer screen
A valid identity document
A colour photo measuring 40x50mm
A written explanation in your own words (in English, Russian or Estonian), stating how you will use the Estonian digital identity
A document proving that the state fee for processing the application has been paid
The application along with the necessary documents will be forwarded to the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board.
What else do I need to be aware of?
The Estonian Police and Border Guard may require additional information about you while carrying out the background check. The results of the background check may depend on your existing connections with Estonia.
When can I pick up my e-Residency card?
When the application is processed and the background check is done you will receive an automated e-mail telling you if you are eligible for Estonian e-Residency. Usuall, the whole process takes a maximum 4 weeks.
