When mentioning digital signing, the first country that everyone thinks of is Estonia. Estonia has digitalized many processes and barely anybody uses written signature anymore. The government has also made access to the digital signing available for everybody through e-residency. But did you know that it is also possible to sign documents digitally in Latvia?
Well, it is. Under Latvian law, a handwritten signature is not necessarily required for a valid contract – documents are also valid with a digital signature. The same applies to registering a company in Latvia – it can be done online without being physically present in Latvia. In addition to Latvians, the option to digitally sign documents in Latvia can also be used by Estonian and Lithuanian e-signature holders. This is possible thanks to the cooperation between the Business Registers of these countries. So all you Estonian e-residents out there – you can easily also establish a company in Latvia if you wish to do so.
General benefits for using digital signature

Signing documents digitally means that overall costs will be optimized. You can save time and costs for traveling to Latvia and once in Latvia also between different offices. This means that you can dedicate this time to something more meaningful.
Mobility
You can sign and send documents from anywhere as long as you have internet.
Safety
A digital signature user will always know where and with what device they have signed the documents and the signature’s timestamp will ensure that it remains unchanged.
Environmentally conscious
By using a digital signature, you are saving natural resources, stationery, print materials, as well as reducing transportation costs. And of course office or archive space. Plus it´s a lot easier to find the document from your computer instead of piles of paper on your office shelves.
