FOR E-RESIDENTS
Estonia’s e-Residency program is designed for forward-thinking individuals and businesses worldwide, including
- Entrepreneurs: Launch an EU-based company to access the European market without physical relocation.
- Freelancers and digital nomads: Simplify business registration, tax management, and client payments with a flexible, remote solution.
- Remote business owners: Manage cross-border teams or projects with secure digital tools.
- Investors: Enter the European market with a trusted, transparent business environment.
- Anyone seeking secure digital transactions: Use legally binding digital signatures for safe, efficient operations in the EU.

Start your company from anywhere in the world
Once you’ve received your Estonian e-Residency ID, you can use it to launch and manage a fully digital EU company without stepping foot in Europe. Here’s how it works:
Form your company online: Use your e-Residency card to register an Estonian OÜ (limited company) through our platform. The process is fast, legally compliant, and doesn’t require physical paperwork or in-person meetings.
Sign documents digitally: With your e-ID, you can sign contracts, shareholder agreements, and tax reports from anywhere in the world—securely and legally binding under EU law.
Manage your business remotely: Submit accounting documents, monitor transactions, and communicate with authorities through our platform or via email. All bookkeeping and reporting are handled by our experienced team.
Issue invoices and receive payments: Create EU-compliant invoices using accounting software included in your package. Accept payments in euros or other currencies through integrated payment systems.
Stay compliant: We take care of annual reports, VAT filings (if needed), and communication with the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. You get reminders and updates, so nothing falls through the cracks.
Scale as you grow: Whether you’re a solo founder or building a remote team, your Estonian OÜ can be used to reinvest profits, apply for EU funding, or even establish physical operations later if needed.

Getting started is easy, straightforward and there is plenty of support along the way
- Check eligibility and prepare documents:

- Submit your application online:
- Visit the official e-Residency website and complete the application form in about 30 minutes.
- Pay the state fee (€150 + shipping, reimbursable for Ukrainian nationals).
- Undergo background check:
- The Estonian Police and Border Guard Board reviews your application, which typically takes 3-8 weeks. You may be asked for additional information.
- Pick up your e-Residency kit:
- Once approved, collect your digital ID card and starter kit (including a smart card reader) in person at an Estonian embassy or designated pickup location. Verify your identity during collection.

Who can apply for Estonian e-Residency?
Almost anyone worldwide can apply for Estonian e-Residency, except citizens of countries under international sanctions. You do not need EU residency, prior business activity, or a connection to Estonia.
Does e-Residency grant citizenship, visa, or tax residency?
No. e-Residency is a digital business identity only. It does not grant citizenship, residency, tax residency, or the right to enter Estonia or the EU without a visa.
What can I do with Estonian e-Residency?
e-Residency allows you to digitally sign documents, establish and manage an Estonian company online, access e-government services, and handle business administration remotely.
Do I need e-Residency to start a company in Estonia?
No. e-Residency is not mandatory, but it significantly simplifies company formation, digital signing, banking onboarding, and ongoing administration for non-residents.
How much does Estonian e-Residency cost?
The official state application fee is €150, plus delivery costs (usually €0–20). Additional costs may apply for company registration, notary services (if needed), accounting, or banking support.
Can I open a bank account remotely as an e-Resident?
In many cases, yes. EU-licensed fintech and electronic money institutions often allow remote onboarding. Traditional banks may require stronger ties to Estonia or an in-person visit.
How long does the e-Residency application process take in Estonia?
The application review usually takes 3–8 weeks, depending on background checks. After approval, the e-Residency kit must be collected in person from a designated pickup location.
Can I use e-Residency for any type of business in Estonia?
Most business activities are allowed. However, regulated sectors such as financial services, crypto, or insurance may require additional licenses or approvals.
Do I need a local address or contact person in Estonia?
Yes. Every Estonian company must have a registered business address and, in some cases, a local contact person. These requirements can be fulfilled via a 1Office virtual office service.
Is accounting mandatory for e-Resident companies?
Yes. All Estonian companies, including those owned by e-Residents, must maintain accounting records and submit annual reports, even if the company has no activity.
How are e-Resident companies taxed in Estonia?
Estonia applies 0% corporate income tax on retained and reinvested profits. Corporate tax is payable only when profits are distributed. VAT and payroll taxes apply if relevant thresholds or activities are met.
Do e-Resident company owners pay personal tax in Estonia?
Not automatically. Personal tax obligations depend on where the individual is tax resident and whether they receive salary or dividends from the Estonian company.
Is e-Residency suitable for freelancers and digital nomads?
Yes. e-Residency is commonly used by freelancers, consultants, SaaS founders, and digital entrepreneurs who want an EU company structure without relocating.
Can an e-Resident invoice EU and non-EU clients?
Yes. Estonian companies owned by e-Residents can invoice clients worldwide. VAT obligations depend on turnover, client location, and type of services or goods provided.
What happens if my e-Residency expires?
If e-Residency expires, you lose digital access but your company remains active. You can renew e-Residency or manage the company via a local representative or service provider.
