Everything you need to know about the new Companies House mandatory identity verification requirements
Identity verification is mandatory from 18 November 2025.
Companies House has confirmed that the mandatory identity verification measures under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 will take effect on 18 November 2025.
From that date, all company directors, persons with significant control (PSCs), and individual members of LLPs must have their identities verified. The rules apply to UK companies, unregistered companies (such as those formed by Royal Charter), and overseas companies with UK establishments.
Verification can be completed in advance, either voluntarily or once required. Companies House has stated that the requirement for officers of registrable relevant legal entities will be introduced at a later date.
Who must verify?
All new and existing directors and PSCs of UK companies, unregistered companies, LLPs, and overseas companies with UK establishments.
Registrable relevant legal entities (RRLEs) must nominate a relevant officer (e.g., a director or LLP member) for verification.
How to verify?
Directly via GOV.UK One Login – Able to do it yourself online or at the Post Office.
Through an ACSP – Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) such as 1Office Group Ltd, who has been serving clients in the UK for over 13 years. Once verified, each individual receives a unique 11-character Companies House personal code, used for all roles and companies.

What is Companies House identity verification?
Identity verification is a new legal requirement under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023. It ensures that every person listed on the Companies House registe, such as company directors, persons with significant control (PSCs), and certain others who has had their identity confirmed by Companies House or an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP).
When does identity verification become mandatory in the UK?
Verification becomes mandatory from 18 November 2025.
However, voluntary verification has been available since April 2025, and individuals are strongly encouraged to complete it early to avoid last-minute delays.
Who needs to verify their identity?
The following must verify their identity:
All company directors (existing and newly appointed)
All persons with significant control (PSCs)
Members of LLPs and their PSCs
Company secretaries or individuals filing on behalf of companies (from spring 2026)
Relevant officers of registrable relevant legal entities (RRLEs), such as holding companies
Does this apply to non-UK residents or foreign nationals?
Yes. The requirements apply to all company directors and PSCs, regardless of nationality or where they live.
What if I am a director or PSC in more than one company?
You only need to verify once. After successful verification, you’ll receive a Companies House personal code, which can be used across all your company roles and positions.
What is the Companies House personal code?
It’s an 11-character unique identifier issued once your identity is verified. It’s personal to you — not your company — and must be provided whenever you connect yourself to a company record or file a confirmation statement.
Keep it private and only share it with people you trust to submit filings on your behalf.
How can I verify my identity?
You have two main options:
Option 1: Verify directly with Companies House
Through the GOV.UK One Login system
Verification can be done via the ID app, security questions, or at a Post Office
Free of charge
Option 2: Verify through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
ACSPs are regulated firms (e.g., accountants, law firms, or company service providers) authorised by Companies House
They will complete checks and confirm verification on your behalf
ACSPs may charge a fee
Example: 1Office Group Ltd is an approved ACSP
What information and documents will I need to verify my identity at Companies House?
You’ll need:
Full name, date of birth, and home address
Proof of identity (such as passport)
A device with a camera (if verifying online via the ID app)
A valid email address (each person must have their own — you cannot share one with another director or PSC)
What happens if I don’t verify my identity?
Failure to verify will mean you:
Cannot incorporate a new company
Cannot act as a director
Cannot file with Companies House
Cannot be listed as a PSC or relevant officer
You may also:
Commit a criminal offence
Face financial penalties or fines
Risk disqualification as a director
